In 2017 the number of victims of the armed conflict in the department of Nariño was 510,193, of whom 153,926 were children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 17.
In addition to the high levels of violence, the scarce presence of the government is one of the main factors of inequality. Illiteracy in the region exceeds 40% of the population and access to basic fundamental rights is almost non-existent.
