"We left because they killed a cousin of mine. The army shot him and dressed him as a soldier from the guerrilla—a false-positive. When we arrived in San Francisco, we noticed that our entire community was displaced already. They were in the main town because of fear. There you could hear the shootings from both sides. It was very hard."

"If you are told: “you are going to be worthy of a home in such and such a way”. And they do not give that to you, you feel already unpleasant. Although we, the poor people, we should be very grateful. And I am very grateful, but I know I do not have an adequate house. I do not have it."

"Today is all good. Before the fear was fierce. One could hear far away the shootings, and in the afternoon one could see the mules carrying the bodies. That is very hard. Or the fact, that every week one could fin corpses on the road. Also seeing the troops go with them, to kill them later."

"Look, when we arrived, the house had no roof. It had no windows, no doors, and even the sanitary was taken away. There were no hoses, no light bulbs, and no power lines. People stole those things to re-sell them. So, my dad had to start from scratch."
